Written after a making my list of what all to bring to tomorrow's Rookie Race...cannot wait!
NOW ON TO THIS WEEK'S ARTICLE...
Tomorrow is the Rookie Race – the fun regatta that all us newer sailors have been looking forward to. Remember: If you feel the need to add a seasoned sailor to your crew mix, there will be folks on hand – just ask using code name “Training Wheels”. Thirteen folks have signed up as of this morning! We are going to have crazy fun!
Don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch since we will be racing over typical lunchtime hours. Don’t want to have to wrestle any “hangry” crew members while you are trying to sail.
I am registering folks starting at 8am tomorrow morning, then I am off to work on a committee boat (setting up course buoys, etc.). Skippers all meet at 10am to get a run-through of the day’s race. Then it is all hands on deck as we get our boats ready for a fun day of races! Last race is no later than 1pm, so that we have time to go searching for missing boats and or crew members.
Afterwards, there will be an awards ceremony to honor and acknowledge skills on display during this race. Never mind that the trophy may be dated 2012 or declare you as the 4th place winner, when we all know you were 1st place – just practice your “party manners” and accept the award with grace…and don’t forget to thank your mamma during your acceptance speech!
I plan to get lots of pictures to share in the following week’s newsletters. I have several pictures from last week’s Rookie Race Prep Class. Big turnout!
And if your race goes well next weekend, well just jump right in there with regattas scheduled the rest of this year...
Here's the regatta lineup:
Sat & Sun, 10/5 & 10/6: Oktoberfest & Catalina Cup
Sat & Sun, 10/19 & 10/20: Equalizer
Sat, 11/2: Fall Off
Sun, 12/8: Kamikaze
There is a lot coming down the pike this fall. Come join us. Maybe we assemble a few "ladies only" crews to compete.
Not so sure you are ready to race in a regatta? Then come help us get the regattas up and running by VOLUNTEERING. I am talking registering racers, riding the committee boat, riding on the chase boats, helping get the food ready...there is a whole other world that goes on around these races. There's a place for everyone on race day...and you thought the only sport going on in the fall was football!
Time to sign off for this week. Until I see you again, be
good to one another.
