Double-Double Regatta
PPYC is hosting a one-day regatta on Saturday, June 11, 2022, named the “Double-Double Regatta”. Why is it called the “Double-Double”? One reason is because boats are limited to two crew members, namely, the skipper and one crew member. The exception is for sailors in the “Bee” Fleet. For those sailors, if they so desire, they may have a “coach” on board. The coach is allowed to give instruction on sailing and racing but are not permitted to take the helm or trim sails (except in the case of an emergency).
The second reason is that these races are double the fun. They are set up to be less stressful than most regattas held by PPYC. A pursuit start is used, which means that the start is staggered with each boat given a start time based on how fast or slow it is relative to other boats. No playing bumper boat games at the start line! Plus, most boats are cruising boats, which means their skippers and crew are more interested in having an enjoyable sail around the lake than playing chicken with other boats when rounding a mark.
Given that boats are limited to two persons being on board, crewing options are more limited. If anyone has an interest in sailing this regatta, let us know and we will try to place you on a boat. Alternatively, we can always use volunteers to help manage the races, register participants, and help serve a continental breakfast. This will give you a good experience on what PPYC membership and participation is all about.
