Greetings PPYC Members,

As we approach the 2026 boating season on Percy Priest Lake, PPYC continues to encourage safe boating practices by all members, particularly with regard to the use of life jackets and the consumption of alcohol while at the Marina and on the water.

We are encouraged to learn that TWRA plans to step up safety and enforcement efforts this season in response to the recent increase in drownings on the lake. TWRA has acquired a new enforcement patrol boat with increased surveillance capacity of activities both on the water and on the shore.

As a reminder, in addition to the increased surveillance efforts, TWRA enforcement officers are permitted to board your boat without a warrant in order to conduct safety and lifejacket inspections.  Also be aware that recent amendments to State laws have increased penalties for BUI offenses that may crossover to automobile driving restrictions.

As a Metro park, alcohol is not permitted to be consumed on land at the Hamilton Creek Marina, expect as allowed by Metro Park approved permit during Club-sponsored Red Cup social events.

It is always a safe practice as you prepare for the season to check the safety equipment on your sailboat, including the cartridges on inflatable life jackets, batteries on radios and signal devices, and charge on fire extinguishers.

Be smart out there. Getting into the practice of always wearing a life jacket may not only provide protection to you and your crew, it may also preempt a life jacket and safety check. And always remember, while a moored or anchored boat is not considered to be in operation, it is an offense for an individual to consume alcohol while operating a boat, even if the vessel is merely floating without anchor.

We want everyone to have a great season and be safe out there.  Check the calendar for the upcoming safety classes.  Let’s all keep safety a top priority as we enjoy the lake this season.

Also, don't forget, we've got the first regatta of the year coming up soon on March 14th. Register to race: Force Five Regatta - 3/14/2026. If you aren't racing, we especially need volunteers! Learn how you can help: Force Five Regatta Volunteers.

Hope to see you at the lake soon!
