I told the crew “boys, we will be doing a Port Tack Start whether I like it or not ‘cause it’s too late to get to the other side of the line”. We did a very slow tack onto port maybe 5 boat lengths from the pin, dipped the nose of the boat, stayed slow, reached down the line maybe 2-boat lengths then up and off on the
near perfect port tack start (that’s what the Sailing World photograph shows). The other boats snuggled together fighting for the flag-boat at the other end of the line, which killed their speeds while we just took off!
