What’s Happ’nin’ …

We have several Events coming up this weekend through next weekend. Check them out at the links below. And don’t forget, we need Volunteers where indicated …
The Cinco de Mayo Evening Cruise was cancelled because of the NOAA severe thunderstorm warning from 2.30pm to 9:00pm. The plan was to go out around 5pm, sail for an hour or so, dock at Elm Hill Marina and join the folks at the First Thursday Sailors’ Meetup, and depending on how long there, sail some more or head back “home” to HCSM. It would have been a nice evening! Don’t forget, registration is required for all of our Cruising events so we can accurately plan the details for each as it approaches.

Speaking of First Thursday Sailors’ Meetups. … I didn't attend the one last night because some of the most severe parts of the thunderstorms coming through covered the entire route from my home to Shipwreck Cove, and Maps showed numerous dark red [worst traffic] segments along every route choice I could make. I did talk with one of the attendees afterwards, though, and I’d summarize that conversation as “It was a light turnout, but extremely high quality.” :-)

The Boat Owners’ Rendezvous on April 30th, the brainchild of Fred Bartrom, a former Commodore and now Chair of our Sailing Education Committee, was a booming success! A group of over a dozen PPYC boat owners rendezvoused at the clubhouse. It is a healthy thing that we have a growing number of our members getting a sailboat. And you could hear the pride as they talked about their vessels. We covered some basic safety and maintenance items. But perhaps the most beneficial outcomes were the connections made between boat owners and the determination to continue these connections through an email group of boat owners. … Some of you may recall that late last year we brought up an initial “under construction” Boat Owners’ Section on our web site. The idea was that over time the content of pages in that initial version would be contributed by boat owners. Check it out at Boat Owners’ Section, or at any time by clicking the red bar across the top of our Home page.

I think I may among a very small number of boat owners at HCSM whose boats are USCG Documented Vessels, so this may be of interest only to any who have acquired their boats recently. The only externally visible evidence of such a boat would be the lack of TWRA registration numbers on both forward sides of the hull. State registration is still required, but only the current renewal stickers are required, and they are placed on both sides of the mast near the bottom. The USCG has issued a notice about a recent flurry of official-looking letters in the U. S. Mail offering document certification/renewal on behalf of vessel owners for a fee. While third-party companies may legitimately provide services to assist with documentation renewals, the USCG’s own renewal process is simple and costs only $26 per year. To renew, go to USCG National Documentation Center and click on Instructions And Forms, then Certificate Of Documentation Application For Renewal.

Finally, some brief updates on some previously reported items:
  • Don’t forget, registration is required for all of our Cruising events so we can accurately plan the details for each as it approachesAbout a week before the event a broadcast email will be sent out to indicate that registrants will be contacted a day or two before the event about details (only those registered for that event will be included in that communication.)
  • If logging in at our web site is not something you often do, it would be worth your time to log in once in a while and avail yourself of the substantially expanded view that logged-in members see. So check it out, maybe starting with this link to a page summarizing the many enhancements we’ve made over the past year or so: Our Web Site — What’s New. While you’re there, see if your Member Profile is up to date. If not, your taking just a few minutes to enter the requested information will be a much appreciated way you can enable us to derive current and accurate information to guide our continuous efforts to make our programs and services enjoyable for our members. Just click on your name at the top right corner of the Home page and click on Profile in the dropdown list. You’ll need to be logged in, of course, since this is a function applicable only to members. If you have any questions or need additional information about this, send an email to communications@ppyc.org.
Go do some sailing — and greet each other on the water when you’re out!
