What’s Happ’nin’ …

Please take note of events coming up in the next few weeks, and click on their links for more information about them. Things already picked up in March as Spring arrived, including our first regatta of 2022 — the Force Five Regatta, which was on March 27th [results have been posted on the Regattas page, where there’s also a link to some great photos taken by John Patire and Kurt Berger.] Our main-season activity schedule is now in full swing. To keep track, make it a habit to regularly check out this page as well as Upcoming Events on the left side of our Home Page (www.ppyc.org.)

A brief logistical note for our Club Boat Program members. … We have installed a combination lock on the asset building on the East side of the Clubhouse. If you need access to the building, send an email to social@ppyc.org.

The venue for our First Thursday Sailors’ Meetups is back to Shipwreck Cove at Elm Hill Marina. The variety of conversations at these get-togethers is really interesting. If you haven’t been enjoying them, come to the next one and see for yourself! These are great opportunities for members and prospective members to visit with each other, and also to interact with our Board members who are among the regular attendees. No agenda, just mixing with fellow sailing enthusiasts and having a good time. Registrations would help us in our work with the facility to plan for the number of people attending. They are limited on space, so please register now for the next one.

On May 7th, the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will teach their Boat Tennessee course locally. This course on responsible boating is designed for both adults and youth operating all types of pleasure boats on Tennessee waters. The course was developed by BoatEd in cooperation with the U. S. Power Squadrons and the State of Tennessee and is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). Topics covered include: introduction to boating, boating laws, personal safety equipment, safe boat handling, navigation, boating problems, trailering and storing your boat, hunting and fishing, waterskiing, personal watercraft, river boating, health and safety concerns and Homeland Security considerations. All the details and contact information are accessible at this link: Boat TN Course 5-7-22.

A word about how important volunteering is to our Club … We should all keep in mind that the willingness of many of our members to volunteer their time to do the work required to make our events and activities successful is what enables us to keep our fees at relatively modest levels in comparison with similar clubs. Absent the efforts of these volunteers, our fees would necessarily be higher because we would have to hire people to do this work. To those who have served as volunteers, thank you for your support of our club. To those who have not yet done so, please consider volunteering for an event soon — and to take it a step further, consider becoming a member of one of our Committees or at least a regular resource they can call on for special needs. Also, see the About Volunteering page for an expansion of these remarks and a link to specific current opportunities.

Do you enjoy looking at pictures about sailing and people who love to sail? Of course, thanks to Google you can find millions of them on the Internet, but the Photo Albums on our web site contain thousands of them taken at our activities and events right here on Percy Priest Lake and at the Marina. Check them out. When you get there, it’s more or less self explanatory how to access particular albums, which appear in descending order by date created or last updated (you can also search for a particular album.) When you click on an album, it’s also fairly self-explanatory how to display all of its pictures as a slideshow or just browse and display any that interest you based on the thumbnail image. We have some members who are excellent photographers, and some also have very high-quality cameras and accessories. When they (or any member, even if just using a smartphone) volunteer their time to take pictures and give us copies of them to post, they are not only enjoying the event themselves, but also (probably) a hobby they like — plus, they are offering their time and talents to our Club as volunteers. A win-win-win situation!

Best wishes to all of you for a safe, healthy and happy Easter weekend!

Finally, some brief updates on some previously reported items:
  • The water level on Percy Priest Lake is controlled by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of a regional flood control system. It is in its Spring rise from Winter Pool (483’) to Summer Pool (490’.) The rise rate varies with the amount of rain in the region, the highest level so far being about 75% of the way to Summer Pool. If the Corps follows its historical pattern, the level will rise to Summer Pool during the remainder of April. You can keep updated on water level projections and other information as often as you like by clicking the PPL/HCSM Info button near the top of the Home page of our web site.
  • Don’t forget, registration will be required for all of our Cruising events so we can accurately planning the details for each as it approachesAbout a week before the event a broadcast email will be sent out to indicate that registrants will be contacted a day or two before the event about details (only those registered for that event will be included in that communication.)
  • If logging in at  our web site is not something you often do, it would be worth your time to log in once in a while and avail yourself of the substantially expanded view that logged-in members see. So check it out, maybe starting with this link to a page summarizing the many enhancements we’ve made over the past year or so: Our Web Site — What’s New. While you’re there, see if your Member Profile is up to date. If not, your taking just a few minutes to enter the requested information will be a much appreciated way you can enable us to derive current and accurate information to guide our continuous efforts to make our programs and services enjoyable for our members. Just click on your name at the top right corner of the Home page and click on Profile in the dropdown list. You’ll need to be logged in, of course, since this is a function applicable only to members. If you have any questions or need additional information about this, send an email to communications@ppyc.org.
Go do some sailing — and greet each other on the water when you’re out! Don’t forget we’re still not all the way back to Summer Pool, so plan your route more carefully than is necessary at Summer Pool.
