Spring is Here!

What’s Happ’nin’ …

In case you don’t recall at the moment, there’s been a progression in the bold blue titles of our Newsletters lately: It’s Winter, But Things Are Gearing Up At Percy Priest Yacht ClubSpring Is Within SightSpring Is Almost Here!; and now Let’s Just Go Ahead And Say It … Spring is Here! Okay, technically it doesn’t start ‘til March 20th, but if you’re a sailor you’ve had “sailing on the brain” for at least a couple of weeks now, and some of you have already been out a few times on warmer days. Our 2022 Club activities actually began in February, March is packed, including our first regatta (the Force Five on the 26th,) and in April we swing into full main-season mode and stay there through September. There are still things going on in the fourth quarter — e.g., the Kamikaze Regatta and the Christmas And Holiday Social.

Just to emphasize one of those activities coming up later this month, our first Regatta of the year is Saturday March 26. The Force Five Regatta is less than 2 weeks away.  Not many registrations yet. Please sign up early so we can plan. Sign up now (before Tuesday 22 March) and save! RegisterWe also still need help running the regatta — in particular, on the support boat and helping with post race meal. If you would be willing to help, please sign up here: Volunteer.

Just two weeks later (April 9th) is HCSM Cleanup Day. There’s a lot of work to be done from 8am to 2pm to give our Marina a fresh and inviting appearance, but there’s another way to look at this particular annual Spring activity. … Consider it yet another way our Club provides opportunities to spend time with old friends and meet new ones — that can all happen while doing the work that needs to be done. Whatever skills you have, they can be put to good use! Registration is not required, but we recommend it because registrations help us plan and organize the day. Think about it. Register here.

The Commodore’s Meet And Greet on March 5th was a blast! It was a great opportunity for members to get to know our Commodore George Blue and other members of our Board, and to visit with other members they know (and perhaps meet new friends.) These events each year provide an informal atmosphere for all of this — plus, to enjoy some good food (on which our Social Director Richard Lewis really outdid himself this year, with some outstanding Volunteers serving and restocking the buffet tables.)

We’ve got some great plans this year for Cruising Events on Percy Priest Lake! All of them have been entered on the PPYC Calendar as placeholder entries so you can get the dates on your personal calendars. About a week before the event a broadcast email will be sent out to indicate that registrants will be contacted a day or two before the event about details (only those registered for that event will be included in that communication.) For this reason and to enable accurate logistical planning, registration will be required for all of our events. Stay tuned and get ready for a fun season!

Here’s a brief update on the PPYC Board’s long-range strategic planning process for our Club. At the monthly Board meeting on February 7th, we reviewed the list of action items from the January 22 all day session, and each member assumed responsibility for one or more of them. We met via Zoom the evening of February 22 to check on our progress. The March 7th monthly Board meeting was the first quarterly agenda slot dedicated to assessing our status in this important endeavor. We are now in the process of prioritizing over sixty specific actions we have identified that will collectively achieve nine major goals. That prioritized list will provide the content needed to write a PPYC 2022 Strategic Plan document that will guide the overall process we’ve undertaken. … We’ll include brief updates like this in the first Newsletter edition that follows each of these quarterly Board discussions, and through special email broadcasts when that seems appropriate.

Finally, some brief updates on some previously reported items:
  • The water level on Percy Priest Lake is controlled by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of a regional flood control system. It is still at or near Winter Pool level (which is 483’) at this point. If the Corps follows its historical pattern, the level will rise to Summer Pool level (490’) from now to mid-April. You can keep updated on water level projections and other information as often as you like by clicking the PPL & HCSM Information button near the top of the Home page of our web site.
  • If logging in at  our web site is not something you often do, it would be worth your time to log in once in a while and avail yourself of the substantially expanded view that logged-in members see. So check it out, maybe starting with this link to a page summarizing the many enhancements we’ve made over the past year or so: Our Web Site — What’s New. While you’re there, see if your Member Profile is up to date. If not, your taking just a few minutes to enter the requested information will be a much appreciated way you can enable us to derive current and accurate information to guide our continuous efforts to make our programs and services enjoyable for our members. Just click on your name at the top right corner of the Home page and click on Profile in the dropdown list. You’ll need to be logged in, of course, since this is a function applicable only to members. If you have any questions or need additional information about this, send an email to communications@ppyc.org.
Go do some sailing — and greet each other on the water when you’re out! Don’t forget we’re still at or near Winter Pool, so plan your route more carefully than is necessary at Summer Pool.
