Spring Is Almost Here!
Newsletter Header Image
** Breaking News **
Hopefully that lead-off phrase didn’t cause you to skip everything else (it’s so overused in the media that it’s a bit “stale”😊. … A heads-up from Social Director / Asset Chair Richard Lewis about the lake level at HCSM. Today it reached 495’, which is 5’ above  Summer Pool level and 12’ above Winter Pool level (483’, where it has been in recent weeks.) It’s back down a few inches now, but is projected to still be no lower than 492’ by midnight Saturday unless the drain-off from rains requires raising it again. If you’re going to the dock area any time soon, it’d be wise to first check the level (PPL Level). As little as another foot above 495’ would begin to cover the ramp up to the the main gate.

What’s Happ’nin’ …

More of Winter is showing up in our rearview and side mirrors now and less through our windshields. Spring is getting closer by the day, and we should all start keeping a closer eye on our Upcoming Events calendar. As always, overall Home page layout limits the list that displays automatically to those closest to the current date, but through any of the three buttons at the top of the list you can immediately display the full year calendar at two different levels of detail or in a one-page summary. Also, two additional one click viewing options have been added just above the title of that column: one is a note saying you can click on the title and scroll down within that box to see events within the next 30 days; and the one just below it is a link that will display the full year calendar.

Speaking of our Home page, just as a reminder, members who log in have access to a plethora of additional information that displays with one click on the Member Resources tab in the expanded Main Menu they see (and of course to Events that are for Members only.) That access alone is enough reason to set your options to automatically log you on when you reach our web site. How? See the footnote below*.

The Commodore’s Meet And Greet on March 5th will be a great opportunity for members to get to know our Commodore George Blue and other members of our Board, and to visit with other members they know (and perhaps meet new friends.) These events each year provide an informal atmosphere for all of this — plus, to enjoy some good food. Because of capacity limits, reservations are required. And because good food requires time to buy ingredients and prepare for serving, reservations close at 10pm Tuesday March 1st. So please register now and join us. We’ll look forward to seeing you!

Here’s a brief update on the PPYC Board’s long-range strategic planning process for our Club. At the monthly Board meeting on February 7th, we reviewed the list of action items from the January 22 all day session, and each member assumed responsibility for one or more of them. We met via Zoom the evening of February 22 to check on our progress. The March 7th monthly Board meeting will be the first of quarterly agenda slots dedicated to assessing our status in this important endeavor. We’ll include brief updates like this in the first Newsletter edition that follows each of these quarterly Board discussions, and through special email broadcasts when that seems appropriate.

We have mentioned over the past few months an initiative by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to find a developer to redevelop Cook Recreation Area into a commercial campground for RV’s and the like. In addition to this likely having a major adverse impact on the pristine appearance of our lake, it would have precluded free use by local residents. We recently learned the good news that the Corps has ended its talks with prospective developers and is no longer pursuing that initiative. We appreciate the efforts of the Friends of Cook Recreation Area organization and its leadership, including former PPYC Board member Gary Pack, in voicing concerns to the Corps about the plan and keeping us informed of its status. Also, we appreciate our Vice Commodore David Curtze composing and sending with the Board's approval letters expressing our concerns to two principals in the Corps. And thanks to any of you who may have expressed concerns individually. If you desire to participate with Friends of Cook Recreation Area in the future as they work with the Corps to define the future of Cook Recreation Area, please visit their website:

Finally, some brief updates on some previously reported items:
  • The water level on Percy Priest Lake is controlled by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of a regional flood control system. It is usually at Winter Pool level (which is 483’) at this point, and has been there most of the time in recent weeks. It traditionally drops from Summer Pool level (490’) to Winter Pool level (483’) from mid-October to mid-December and stays at that level until it rises to Summer Pool level from mid-March to mid-April. Seven feet is a very significant drop that introduces aground hazards for keelboats that aren’t hazards when I the lake is at Summer Pool level. You can keep updated on water level projections and other information as often as you like by clicking the PPL & HCSM Information button near the top of the Home page of our web site.
  •  If logging in at our web site is not something you often do, it would be worth your time to log in once in a while and avail yourself of the substantially expanded view that logged-in members see. So check it out, maybe starting with this link to a page summarizing the many enhancements we’ve made over the past year or so: Our Web Site — What’s NewWhile you’re there, see if your Member Profile is up to date. If not, your taking just a few minutes to enter the requested information will be a much appreciated way you can enable us to derive current and accurate information to guide our continuous efforts to make our programs and services enjoyable for our members. Just click on your name at the top right corner of the Home page and click on Profile in the dropdown list. You’ll need to be logged in, of course, since this is a function applicable only to members. If you have any questions or need additional information about this, send an email to communications@ppyc.org.
Go do some sailing if you’re a year-round sailor -- and greet each other on the water when you’re out! Don’t forget we’re at or near Winter Pool, so plan your route more carefully than is necessary at Summer Pool.
