What’s Up At PPYC

Our second First Thursday Member Meet-Up on June 3rd was another big success — good social interaction, an opportunity for some of our newest members to meet some of our longer-term members, and some great food for those who made a meal of the occasion. These Meetups — held on First Thursdays beginning at 6:00pm — are great opportunities for members to visit with each other, and also to interact with our Board members who will be among the regular attendees. There’s no agenda, just mixing with fellow sailing enthusiasts. The venue for each Meetup is can be accessed by clicking on its entry in the Upcoming Events calendar on our Homepage. Registration is required. This enables us to plan effectively with the venue’s management.

The Double Double Regatta is set for June 19th. Details — including event registration and the ability to volunteer as a support person — can be accessed by clicking that item in the Upcoming Events calendar on our Home page or the same item on the Regattas page. More volunteers are needed, so please consider being one.

The first of six on-water Cruising events took place on May 30th — watching the Nashville Shores fireworks show from our anchored boats in Bear Island coves. Placeholder entries for the remaining five events have been made on the Upcoming Events calendar on our Home page. Each event will be updated with details as its time draws nearer. If you would like to be included in all of our cruising-related communications, let us know at cruising@ppyc.org and we’ll add you to that distribution list (don’t worry, you won’t get an email every time someone posts they are headed out to sail.)

Back on volunteering, we should all keep in mind that the willingness of many of our members to volunteer their time to do the work required to make our events and activities successful is what enables us to keep our fees at relatively modest levels in comparison with similar clubs. Absent the efforts of these volunteers, our fees would necessarily be higher because we would have to hire people to do this work. To those who have served as volunteers, thank you for your support of our club. To those who have not yet done so, please consider volunteering for an event soon — and to take it a step further, consider becoming a member of the Competitive Sailing Committee (which plans the events that require the most support) or at least a regular resource they can call on for special needs. Also, see the About Volunteering page for an expansion of these remarks and a link to current specific opportunities.

Quick updates on some previously report items:
  • Skipper/Crew Matchup capability ... activity continues to pick up, probably as a result of the accelerating pace of events in which these matchups might be of interest. If this interests you, check it out by clicking Sail in our main menu and selecting Crew:Needed/Available in the list that appears.
  • Boat Owners’ Section ... it’s “evolution” continues. If you’re a member who owns a boat, there are significant benefits you could derive from being involved in this section on our web site. It’s ultimate value will depend on the level of member involvement, so check it out and consider being a part of its “evolution.” Access to the section’s Home Page is available to members through the Member Resources menu, or now through this link: Boat Owners’ Section.
  • If logging in at our web site is not something you often do, it would be worth your time to log in once in a while and avail yourself of the substantially expanded view that logged-in members see. So check it out, maybe starting with this link to a page summarizing the many enhancements we’ve made over the past year or so: Our Web Site — What’s New.
Go do some sailing -- and greet each other on the water when you’re out!
