Need volunteer Skippers for LATH. Our LATH [Learning At The Helm] program has really been ramping up this year. In some weeks, getting all registrants matched to Skippers has been challenging. If you’re a boat owner, you obviously enjoy sailing. Think about how you first got interested in sailing, and whether you might enjoy helping people find out if they would enjoy the sport as they actually learn how to sail. Then consider donating 2 to 3 hours of your time on Tuesday evenings from 5:00pm to Sunset to serve as a LATH Skipper. If this sounds interesting to you, please let George Blue know at sailing@ppyc.org.
Quick update on yesterday’s note about marina access. If you’re planning any on-water activities out of Hamilton Creek Sailboat Marina this Memorial Day weekend, you need to be aware that access will be a bit tedious, and parking probably next to impossible. The Music City BMX event is expected to draw 10,000 people into Hamilton Creek Park — some already arriving yesterday and today, with the peak being Saturday and Sunday. See the picture below of the sign posted by Metro Parks. Although we’ve been assured that the docks will remain accessible, ingress/egress will likely be much slower because cars will be parked on roadsides as well as in all parking lots in the entire park area — and bicyclists will probably be crowding whatever open road space there may be. One option my family and I have decided on: a non-sailing member will take us there and pick us up later — and if upon arrival at the turnoff from Bell Road it looks like a traffic jam we’ll just walk the 3/4 of a mile to the docks and back. It’ll be good exercise. When people want to sail, they find a way!
