2020: Going Strong!
Newsletter Header Image

Great news! Last week's major CDC announcement means many of the restrictions that have been curtailing our activities and events for over a year are now behind us. Metro quickly made those changes in the guidelines under which we’ve been required to operate, and local businesses and organizations are making operational adaptations accordingly. We will be reviewing the policy we published last Summer and modifying it soon, and we’re excited about what this means for our remaining activities and events. Updates will appear on the Coronavirus Updates page regularly as we make these changes. You can always access that page directly from our Home page by clicking the red banner.

Our first First Thursday Member Meet-Up on May 6th was a big success — good social interaction, an opportunity for some of our newest members to meet some of our longer-term members, and some great food for those who made a meal of the occasion. These Meetups are great opportunities for members to visit with each other, and also to interact with our Board members who will be among the regular attendees — no agenda, just mixing with fellow sailing enthusiasts.

The Galen Freeman Regatta, despite some very light winds for racing, took place as planned last Saturday and Sunday. Results can be accessed through this link: Galen Freeman Regatta Results. Soon, we’ll update the Regattas page on our web site with more information about it. If anybody took some pictures they can share, please send me a few by just replying to this email.

Here’s some exciting news for cruisers in our club! The Cruising Sailing Committee our Board formed last year has been ramping up after a dormant first year because of the Pandemic. Under the leadership of their chair, Mike McKervey, the committee is in the process of putting together some plans for Summer and Fall on-water activities. In support of that effort I’ll be setting up some new capabilities on our web site, including a place to coordinate informal and impromptu cruises for our members (why not sail with friends?) If you would like to be included in all of our cruising-related communications, let us know at cruising@ppyc.org and we’ll add you to that distribution list (don’t worry, you won’t get an email every time someone posts they are headed out to sail.)

A surprising statistic about our website access is that many of our members who visit it — even those who are the most frequent visitors — don’t log in very often. There is a huge difference between the member menu and the public menu. As with many sites, it’s very easy to have ours automatically sign you in when you get to it, and the security risks of doing that are no greater than they are in other situations where you have probably invoked that capability. Even if you choose not to utilize that capability, it would be worth your time to log in once in a while and avail yourself of the expanded view you will see. So check it out, maybe starting with this link to a page summarizing the many enhancements we’ve made over the past year or so: Our Web Site — What’s New.

Quick updates on some previously report items:
  • Skipper/Crew Matchup capability ... activity continues to pick up, probably as a result of the accelerating pace of events in which these matchups might be of interest. If this interests you, check it out by clicking Sail in our main menu and selecting Crew:Needed/Available in the list that appears.
  • Boat Owners’ Section ... it’s “evolution” continues. If you’re a member who owns a boat, there are significant benefits you could derive from being involved in this section on our web site. It’s ultimate value will depend on the level of member involvement, so check it out and consider being a part of its “evolution.” Access to the section’s Home Page is available to members through the Member Resources menu, or now through this link: Boat Owners’ Section.
Go do some sailing -- and greet each other on the water when you’re out!
