2021 Season, Here We Come!
Newsletter Header Image

For any of you who didn’t watch the America’s Cup races this month, defender New Zealand beat challenger Italy 7-3 and will retain the trophy they’ve now won four times. Some long-time sailors don’t follow that competition as closely as they did before it became low-flying aircraft with nothing but one of the foils in the water, maneuvers being done with buttons and taps on computer screens, and grinders pushing buttons to do things they’ve always done but also serving in the major new role of generating the power needed by the massive array of gears and hydraulics below where change-out sails used to be. Click here to express your opinion on this: America’s Cup.

Now, visualize being in the driver’s seat of your vehicle, with a fellow PPYC member in the passenger's seat. You look in the rear view mirror and say “Bummer! 2020 was a disaster overall, even from a sailor’s perspective.” Your fellow member says, “Well, it definitely wasn’t a great year, but we did end up on a good note — e.g., the last couple of Regattas happened. Now, you look through the windshield at the road ahead as 2021 is unfolding — COVID-19 is finally showing a downturn, vaccinations are becoming available to everybody within a couple of months, restrictions are beginning to slacken ... . From a club perspective, you see a very encouraging message from our Commodore painting a verbal picture of an exciting 2021 (still accessible through the Home page,) an Events Calendar already taking shape with a Regatta and five educational opportunities now through April, and a view through the 2021 Events Sneak Peek link of everything planned this year. This could be a banner year even if some COVID-19 restrictions linger for a while.

It’s great news for our Racers that our racing activities are well on their way not only to their excellence of past years but even to what we might think of as “the next level,” but we should also note that some activities for our Cruisers are in the making now that the Cruising Sailing Committee formed last year is taking shape (2020 obviously wasn’t the best year to start up a new committee.) Stay tuned, Cruisers!

As previously communicated in several ways, our Board felt that going ahead with our 2021 Annual Meeting as an email and web site event was best in view of COVID-19 restrictions making it impossible to meet in person. The Annual Meeting email was sent at 6:30pm on 3/6 to all Active Primary and Solo members. A banner item about the meeting, with links for viewing the packet and voting, appeared at the top of the Home page at 7:00am on 3/7 and remained there until well after midnight 3/19. The meeting process ended 3/19 as stated in the 3/6 announcement, there was a quorum by a wide margin, and both items requiring membership approval passed. The Board members would like to thank you for working with them to conduct the meeting this way under these circumstances.

Weather is getting better, the lake will soon be rising to Summer Pool, ... What else do we need? Sailors! Greet each other on the water as you enjoy what we all love to do.⛵️
