Ahoy sailors!

I am happy to announce that member Marlene Dahlem has confirmed she will serve as Chair of the 2021 Membership Committee and has been Board approved. Marlene was the newsletter editor a couple of years ago. I plan to be working closely with her and am asking anyone who would like to volunteer to serve on this committee with us to please email me at commodore@ppyc.org.

There are still openings for Committee Chairs in 2021, and I hope to have all Chairs completed by year end. If anyone would like to volunteer either as Committee Chair or committee members, please email me at commodore@ppyc.org for these specific committees:

The MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE is responsible for promoting new Club membership and keeping Members and prospective members informed about Membership requirements, opportunities and benefits. CHAIR - Marlene Dahlem.

The COMPETITIVE SAILING COMMITTEE is responsible for the organization and promotion of the racing program of the Club including all Club races and regattas.

The SOCIAL COMMITTEE is responsible for organizing and conducting all Club social activities and having them posted on the Annual Calendar. CHAIR - Richard Lewis.

The SAILING EDUCATION COMMITTEE is responsible for organization and promotion of sailing instruction events.

The ASSET COMMITTEE is responsible for acquiring and managing maintenance of all Club assets. CHAIR - Richard Lewis.

The COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE is responsible for Club communication media including Member emailing, the Club newsletter and the Club website. CHAIR - Charles Jones.

The CLUB BOAT COMMITTEE will be responsible for managing the sailboats owned by the Club. This will include boat maintenance, terms for boat use, check rides to qualify Club Boat skippers, development of policies related to use of Club boats, and any other activities related to managing the Club Boat Program
.

The CRUISING SAILING COMMITTEE will be responsible for organization and promotion of non-racing sailing events.

Our last Board meeting for 2020 will be this coming Monday, December 7th @ 6:30pm and will be approving the 2021 proposed budget. This budget proposal will be forwarded to the entire membership via email by December 26th and presented for your votes at the Annual Meeting on January 9th. We will send out reminders as the Annual Meeting gets closer.

Hoping all of you had a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving with your families. I had no one from my family with whom to celebrate, as they are all states away, and I know this will also be the case for Christmas for me and many of you who will face the same situation – I wish it wasn’t so. It is a different year and I know sacrifices have been made for health and safety issues. We’re all in this together for sure!

Hugs to all,

Kathy Ware, Commodore

Upcoming Events

From James ODell, Regatta Chair. ... Percy Priest Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the Kamikaze Regatta. ... This year the Kamikaze is going to be a little different, as you might expect. See the Notice of Race for some changes because of the pandemic. ... As normal for this race, we will be running a Pursuit Style Race. This means each different type of boat will have its own start countdown. The faster your boat is, the longer your countdown before you can cross the start line. Whoever finishes first, wins! The courses will be distance races. So, depending on the wind, the course may round some islands headed north toward the dam. Or, it may head south toward Hobson Pike bridge. ... This regatta is open to all sailboat types and will be using PHRF handicap for scoring. Skipper and crew of all skill levels are invited to join in. This is typically a fun (if not cold and wet) to close out our sailing year. If you haven't raced before, make sure to send an email to racing@ppyc.org so we can assign you a countdown time for your boat's start. ... See this Kamikaze Regatta link for more information and details about registration.

We regret that it has become necessary to postpone our 50th Anniversary Celebration event until a TBA date in Fall 2021. We want to do this right, and it simply isn’t possible to do that in the current COVID-19 situation. As mentioned previously, the Christmas Dinner And Social has been cancelled for the same reason. Please note that all remaining 2020 events are being updated regularly to reflect current status, so check them out on the Events Calendar.

Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for 2:00-4:00pm Saturday, January 9th. COVID-19 restrictions made the clubhouse unsuitable as a venue this year. The meeting will be held just two miles South of the turn from Bell Road into Hamilton Creek Park, at Priest Lake Presbyterian Church, 2787 Smith Springs Road, Nashville, TN 37217. See the item on the Events Calendar for additional information.

Please check the special page we've added this year to keep you regularly and frequently updated on the overall status of the Coronavirus situation, including its impact on our Events schedule -- Coronavirus Updates.

Communications Corner

In the November 6th Communications Corner, I mentioned that based on sufficient feedback I had received about having a Boat Owners’ Section on our website, I’d proceed with refining the Under Construction Version there now. In the November 20th edition, I said I’m still in development mode on that, but should have it in an initial “ready for prime time” state soon. Today, I’m asking for your input to help me focus on features you’ve suggested so far in descending order of your expressed interests, which are: Periodic work days where boat owners and others interested in participating can spend an afternoon helping each other with things like changing lines, servicing winches, tuning rigging, etc.; Buying a sailboat / Selling a sailboat; Things to do on Percy Priest Lake in a sailboat; Single Handing; Safety afloat; Demystifying docking; Trailering and launching; Sailing Percy Priest Lake in the Winter; Degree of winterizing advisable for HCSM; Pier Groups (items of particular interest to owners on Pier 1, Pier 2, Pier 3, Pier 4, or Pier 5;) Directory of Boat Owners; Recommended Vendor List (e.g., for rigging and sail repair, underwater hull inspections, etc.;) and Useful links to other sites.

Just as an example of a feature that would be very helpful right now to me, personally, is “Degree of winterizing advisable for HCSM.” I’m having my Pearson 27 transported to HCSM on December 18, and it would be very helpful to me to know now what other boat owners at this marina do with their boats in the winter — i.e., completely winterize them and leave them dormant until Spring (and if so, when,) or if not, any less comprehensive actions they may take, and what temperature thresholds provoke those actions.

I’d sincerely appreciate as many responses as possible to this very brief check-off list that will enable you to quickly indicate your level of interest in each of the above capabilities and/or to offer suggestions for capabilities not in that list: Boat Owner Preferences.

Don’t forget to check the Coronavirus Updates page regularly for the latest information on how that plan relates specifically to PPYC [Link below.]

Please Note. We’ve added a special Coronavirus Updates page to the Member Resources section.  We will post the most current PPYC-specific information we have about the Coronavirus situation there. You can access it through the Member Resources Menu, by clicking the link in the top banner on this page, or by clicking here: Coronavirus Updates
