Commodore's Corner

Ahoy sailors!

I just returned from a trip to Mobile, Alabama for 4 days to visit Travis’ family and had made previous arrangements with the Commodore at Mobile Yacht Club (Casey Goleman) to meet and exchange burgees. See pics below. So, I have a new burgee to add to our collection, and Casey said he did not think that PPYC’s was part of theirs! We had a wonderful time at lunch, learning about their history and becoming acquainted with each other. MYC used to be the oldest yacht club in the U.S, established in 1847 with a membership of almost 450, and is second only to New York Yacht Club but is still the oldest sailing club on the Gulf Coast. Beautiful place with a view of Mobile Bay. I have been invited back to sail at any time and plan to do so! They have suffered 3 hurricanes this year and are still recovering!

Take a look at the area just below this article about our PPYC Store. It's accessible anytime through one of the Quicklinks near the top of the Home page at our web site (a link is in the area below, too.)

Please take some time this Thanksgiving week to show your family and friends how important they are to you. While 2020 has presented many challenges, I hope you find hope, peace, and happiness this holiday season.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and may this Thanksgiving holiday remind us all that gratitude is a never-ending gift of joy.

Blessings to all,

Kathy Ware, Commodore

From James ODell, Regatta Chair. ... Percy Priest Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the Kamikaze Regatta. ... This year the Kamikaze is going to be a little different, as you might expect. See the Notice of Race for some changes because of the pandemic. ... As normal for this race, we will be running a Pursuit Style Race. This means each different type of boat will have its own start countdown. The faster your boat is, the longer your countdown before you can cross the start line. Whoever finishes first, wins! The courses will be distance races. So, depending on the wind, the course may round some islands headed north toward the dam. Or, it may head south toward Hobson Pike bridge. ... This regatta is open to all sailboat types and will be using PHRF handicap for scoring. Skipper and crew of all skill levels are invited to join in. This is typically a fun (if not cold and wet) to close out our sailing year. If you haven't raced before, make sure to send an email to racing@ppyc.org so we can assign you a countdown time for your boat's start. ... See this Kamikaze Regatta link for more information and details about registration.

We regret that it has become necessary to postpone our 50th Anniversary Celebration event until a TBA date in Fall 2021. We want to do this right, and it simply isn’t possible to do that in the current COVID-19 situation. As mentioned previously, the Christmas Dinner And Social has been cancelled for the same reason. Please note that all remaining 2020 events are being updated regularly to reflect current status, so check them out on the Events Calendar.

Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for 2:00-4:00pm Saturday, January 9th. COVID-19 restrictions made the clubhouse unsuitable as a venue this year. The meeting will be held just two miles South of the turn from Bell Road into Hamilton Creek Park, at Priest Lake Presbyterian Church, 2787 Smith Springs Road, Nashville, TN 37217. See the item on the Events Calendar for additional information.

Please check the special page we've added this year to keep you regularly and frequently updated on the overall status of the Coronavirus situation, including its impact on our Events schedule -- Coronavirus Updates.

I’ve been practically in full-time job mode for the past nine days to now — Wednesday evening, November 25. My “job” was 1) going to three locations two- to three-hour drives from here to look at boats I was considering buying to replace the Hunter 25 I sold a few weeks ago; 2) signing a purchase agreement on a Pearson 27 in Kentucky; 3) taking care of all the details to consummate the purchase, get insurance, etc.; and 3) identifying transport options and contracting for one just today. So come December 18 I’ll have her in my slip at HCSM. My neighbor just bought a Hunter 27, so it’ll be a bit tighter than when we both had 25-foot boats in our slips, but I’ve measured everything and found that even with fenders on both sides of both boats it’ll be tight, but doable (both boats have inboard diesels and wheel steering, so maneuvering into tight spaces will be easier than it would be with outboards and tillers.

We went to press about 36 hours early this week so we can enjoy time with our families and friends during this Thanksgiving weekend. Best wishes to you and yours as we hope you’re doing the same and having
a safe and happy Thanksgiving weekend.

Don’t forget to check the Coronavirus Updates page regularly for the latest information on how that plan relates specifically to PPYC [Link below.]
