Ahoy sailors! I don’t have much to tell you this week, just going over some reminders. You should have received your ballots in the mail by now (if not, they’re on the way). So, please either mail them back or Email our secretary according to the ballot directions. For those members who were upgraded to full membership this year, it will be your first time personally voting on January 9th at our Annual Meeting! You will have a chance to read the proposed 2021 budget near the end of December, two weeks before the Annual Meeting – an item that will be discussed and voted on at the meeting.

Again, I encourage you to check out the Coral Reef website for Christmas gift ideas. Andrew and his team have fine-tuned our PPYC section with our personalized 50th anniversary items. Charles has quoted the website in his previous notes, but here it is again: Coral Reef - PPYC.

I would like to extend an invitation to all club members to volunteer to be the Membership Chair for 2021, and I will be working closely with that committee as Past Commodore. It’s a fun committee on which to serve, as I have been the Chair for the past 2 years. At the moment, I do have 3 volunteers that previously served and will touch base again with those 3 women to see if they wish to continue serving in 2021. If anyone would also like to volunteer to be a committee member only, please email me!!

I hope you know that I have always been available to hear from our members with any suggestions or information, or anything you wish to discuss. Please feel free to contact me by email commodore@ppyc.org.

This year, because of COVID, we are all suffering from the lack of personal contact and fellowship at PPYC activities (I’m in serious withdrawal without hugs) and am anxiously hearing of the worldwide increases, let alone those in our country, of more new cases. There was a second wave predicted, so I guess we’re in it, right in time for flu season. Please take care of yourselves and stay safe by honoring the precautions. I just got tested again at CVS last week “just because” (negative again). It was easy.

Missing all of you so much!

From James ODell, Regatta Chair. ... Percy Priest Yacht Club cordially invites you and your crew to attend the Kamikaze Regatta. ... This year the Kamikaze is going to be a little different, as you might expect. See the Notice of Race for some changes because of the pandemic. ... As normal for this race, we will be running a Pursuit Style Race. This means each different type of boat will have its own start countdown. The faster your boat is, the longer your countdown before you can cross the start line. Whoever finishes first, wins! The courses will be distance races. So, depending on the wind, the course may round some islands headed north toward the dam. Or, it may head south toward Hobson Pike bridge. ... This regatta is open to all sailboat types and will be using PHRF handicap for scoring. Skipper and crew of all skill levels are invited to join in. This is typically a fun (if not cold and wet) to close out our sailing year. If you haven't raced before, make sure to send an email to racing@ppyc.org so we can assign you a countdown time for your boat's start. ... See this Kamikaze Regatta link for more information and details about registration.

We regret that it has become necessary to postpone our 50th Anniversary Celebration event until a TBA date in Fall 2021. We want to do this right, and it simply isn’t possible to do that in the current COVID-19 situation. As mentioned previously, the Christmas Dinner And Social has been cancelled for the same reason. Please note that all remaining 2020 events are being updated regularly to reflect current status, so check them out on the Events Calendar.

Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for 2:00-4:00pm Saturday, January 9th. COVID-19 restrictions made the clubhouse unsuitable as a venue this year. The meeting will be held just two miles South of the turn from Bell Road into Hamilton Creek Park, at Priest Lake Presbyterian Church, 2787 Smith Springs Road, Nashville, TN 37217. See the item on the Events Calendar for additional information.

Please check the special page we've added this year to keep you regularly and frequently updated on the overall status of the Coronavirus situation, including its impact on our Events schedule -- Coronavirus Updates.

Toward the end of each year, the Events Calendar on the Home page at our web site understandably gets shorter because we don’t begin finalizing details for events in the coming year until January. This year, we decided to put a link at the end of the list called 2021 Events — Sneak Peek. Clicking that link will display a complete list of next year’s events showing just their dates so you can mark your calendars for those in which you will be or think you might want to be participating. The more detailed entries will begin showing up in the regular list during the first quarter.

In the November 6th Communications Corner, I mentioned that based on sufficient feedback I had received about having a Boat Owners’ Section on our website, I’d proceed with refining the Under Construction Version there now. I’m still in development mode on that, but should have it in an initial “ready for prime time” state soon. This week, I have a good example of how such a page could be very beneficial for boat owners. ...

I just bought a Pearson 27 that’s at a marina in Southern Kentucky. It’s a done deal, and I now own the boat. However, in looking for transport options, I’m learning yet another new lesson about boat ownership in a landlocked state where companies providing services to sailors are not on every corner as they are in coastal areas. The best options I’ve found so far are 1) a small operation located in Nashville, but it’s a husband-wife team that does one transport per week and is current selling “slots” next March!] and 2) a company in Memphis from which I haven’t yet heard back (I know the owner.) I certainly don’t want to drive two hours to sail between now and then, so I’m diligently looking for other options. If anybody can offer pointers on finding slip to slip transport options — or suggest alternatives like splitting the job into de-rigging at source, lift and transport only, and launching/rigging at destination — please let me know by emailing me at Communications@ppyc.org.

Best wishes to you and yours for a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
