Ahoy sailors!

Oops! I incorrectly quoted the date of our annual Kamikaze race last week. It will be held on Sunday, December 6th with the same COVID-19 restrictions in place. And for the hearty souls, the annual New Year's Day race has always been a fun day for those cold weather sailors! I am not one and will not see you there that day!

I don't have a lot of new information for you, as our Board has been diligently working on prepping the 2021 officer slate ballot to be published and sent out by this Sunday. You will be able to cast your votes to the secretary by email, and instructions will be noted on the ballot. As I noted last week, we are also working hard on the 2021 budget that will be distributed by December 26th.

Hope all of you are well and not affected in any way by COVID-19.  As we're getting closer to Thanksgiving, I know it may affect how people are going to celebrate, perhaps having to reduce the number of people attending. I have not seen my daughter and brothers since last Christmas and this will be the first time in 72 years that my family will not be together at Christmastime. So sad. I would guess that may be happening to some of you also. Our family is setting up ZOOM in our households to at least be able to talk on Thanksgiving — better than no contact.

Missing all of you!

A big thanks from Richard Lewis, our Social Director, to George and St. Clair Blue for their help last Saturday in getting the safety and flag boats ready for the winter. A lot of work was done last Saturday, but there's still more to do. Next up is getting the Club Boats ready. Richard does many things for our club that are far beyond serving as Social Director, and the 13 items he listed in his call for volunteers in last week's Newsletter were just a few examples. You don't need to wait for an invitation to offer your help. Call Richard at 615-974-1894 or email him at dl16120@bellsouth.net to let him know that you'd like to help with future projects when he schedules them.

We regret that it has become necessary to postpone our 50th Anniversary Celebration event until a TBA date in Fall 2021. We want to do this right, and it simply isn’t possible to do that in the current COVID-19 situation. As mentioned previously, the Christmas Dinner And Social has been cancelled for the same reason. Please note that all remaining 2020 events are being updated regularly to reflect current status, so check them out on the Events Calendar.

Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for 2:00-4:00pm Saturday, January 9th. COVID-19 restrictions made the clubhouse unsuitable as a venue this year. The meeting will be held just two miles South of the turn from Bell Road into Hamilton Creek Park, at Priest Lake Presbyterian Church, 2787 Smith Springs Road, Nashville, TN 37217. See the item on the Events Calendar for additional information.

Please check the special page we've added this year to keep you regularly and frequently updated on the overall status of the Coronavirus situation, including its impact on our Events schedule -- Coronavirus Updates.

Communications Corner

I mentioned back in the August 28th Communications Corner that I had bought a boat in July (a Hunter 27.) Well, guess what? A few weeks ago, I sold it!  After a lot of great sailing over the past few months, I decided to “test the waters” and put it up for sale since the best sailing season is winding down and I had planned all along to replace it before next Spring. The boat I bought this year was a good one, but I’m looking for features to which I must admit I became “spoiled” in my 35+ years of sailing 30- to 45-foot boats — at a bare minimum: a 25- to 28-foot sloop (preferably masthead) with wheel steering, roller furling jib, self-tailing winches and an enclosed head (outboard with cockpit controls preferred, but inboard OK.) Now, I’m actively investigating options with those features to tie up to my empty slip. I’ve taken two 2- to 3-hour trips to look at some interesting prospects, and will take a third this Monday.

I’ve mentioned before that this is the first time in my life (I’m 75) I’ve lived in a place where owning a boat made any sense. Now, there’s an addition to my list of things to which I’ve become “spoiled:” being able to be out on the lake — under sail with motor off and raised — about an hour after driving away from my home. Here’s hoping I’ll be able to get back in that mode soon — maybe even within 45 minutes if I end up with an inboard engine (and of course with the “must-have roller furling jib.) 😊⛵️.
