Commodore's Corner
I asked Charles, our Communications Director to post this narrative I read recently on a link from a gal who almost drowned in our lake and who has advocated how important PFD’s are in an emergency situation. Please read and remember: Almost Drowned. We who serve in the Coast Guard Auxiliary are in charge of boat safety on the water and certainly commend this woman kayaker, willing to tell her story of having survived her near drowning in our lake and how she now understands the important of PFDs.

PPYC has received a recent letter from the Park Ranger for Percy Priest Lake (under the Operations Division of the Nashville U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) that notified us that all PPYC activities through June 15 are postponed.  So disappointing, as this has already caused us to cancel the Galen Freeman Regatta scheduled for this weekend, and now will cancel the “Double Double” race scheduled for June 13th.  The Ranger also stated all applications are on hold through that date, and this date may continue to be pushed back if the situation warrants.  At this point, we don’t foresee any occupancy into the club house until mid Phase 2.

James O’Dell mentioned a neat story to publish from our members might be, “what caused you to name your boat what you did”.  I’d like to share that I have been blessed by a gift 2 years ago of my 25’ Kelt sailboat from Mark and  Donna Lombard (former members who moved).  They gave me this boat as a thank you for all the years Bob and I dedicated ourselves to the “Learning at the Helm” program.  Mark told me that when they first started sailing with Bob and me at LATH, and even as their sailing knowledge and experience increased, that Bob and I were always there to answer questions and encourage their sailing experiences.  They had named their boat “Soul Mate”, and when Mark first showed me their boat-to be mine, I nearly cried that it was called “Soul Mate”.  How appropriate a boat’s name I would take over carried the same namesake as the same joy of my life, Bob Ware, even though he would never sail it.  I will always sail “Soul Mate” in Bob’s honor as a part of his legacy.  This gift shared by Mark and Donna was what Bob and I meant to them in their sailing learning process.  WOW!! I am still humbled by this and know it is a gift that will keep on giving, because I have willed the boat to the PPYC Club Boat program upon my death (if they want it) to continue helping sailors to learn sailing by Bob’s legacy given to this club.!

Upcoming Events

Since all of our activities are cancelled through June 15, the only thing we'd like to communicate here is the importance of keeping in touch with us regularly on the overall Coronavirus situation -- as it relates to us, specifically.

All of our scheduled activities for 2020 remain on the Events Calendar, with “CANCELLED” in the titles of those up to and including June 15 and “TENTATIVE — To Be Re-Evaluated June 1“ for all remaining items in June and all items in July.

Please see the note Charles added in the Communications Corner section below about a special page we've added to keep you regularly and frequently updated on the overall status of the Coronavirus situation, including its impact on our Events schedule.
Welcome New Members Jeri and Michael Doebelin

We are excited to be new members of Percy Priest Yacht Club. Jeri grew up in Mayfield, KY.  I am originally from Germany where I grew up and got educated. I moved in 1987, first to Clearwater FL, where I was a little exposed to sailing. We are living just a few miles from the lake, and wanted to take this opportunity to learn sailing. At this time we have only been crewing a few times, and enjoyed it very much. We have a Hunter at the marina, and hope to get more involved in Learning At The Helm and also take lessons.

Communications Corner
At our May 11 Board meeting [via Zoom,] there was some discussion about a FaceBook group page called PPYC. The group has 260 members, and the description in its About section begins with “Members of Percy Priest Yacht Club — All current PPYC members in good standing and those entering into our Learning At The Helm (LATH) program are welcome and encouraged to join.” The result of that discussion was a suggestion that we make this group an integral part of our overall processes for communicating with our members. To that end, I’ve become one of four Administrators of the group, and this week will begin integrating it into our communication channels. A first step in that direction will be to begin making a brief post each week when our Newsletter has been published, providing a link to it within the post.

We’ll also begin to include references to the PPYC FaceBook group in our emails and web pages and references to our emails and web pages in posts to the Facebook group’s page. And, I’ll do at least one introductory post to the group page indicating that we want to incorporate this group into our overall process for communicating with our members and the public, mentioning what kinds of things we’ll be posting there and what kinds of things we’d like to see others post — and perhaps most importantly, asking for suggestions.

By the way, you may not have noticed it, but at the top right of the header on all of our web pages [near where you click to log in or to access your profile if you’re already logged in,] there has for quite some time been a FaceBook link that will take you to the PPYC group page. There are other Social Media links there as well, and over time we may also integrate them more closely into our communication processes.

This might be a good time for me to mention that for this and other reasons, I’m looking for members who would be interested in serving on our Communications Committee. If that’s you, please let me know at communications@ppyc.org. Also Kathy is looking for members who would be interested in serving on the Asset Committee, and she suggested I mention that committee service is an excellent way to earn some Service Hours.

Remember, you can always access the PPYC FaceBook Group page through the link in the header of all of our web site pages. Here’s a direct link to it if you’d like to access it now: PPYC FaceBook Group.
