Sailing — Weather Or Not (Virtual)

Note: This training session will now be virtual. We will email registered participants a link to join the event.

Understanding the weather is an area of sailing education that is often overlooked, but is ultimately of great importance for the comfort and safety of sailors. This course will utilize “The Cloudspotter’s Guide: The Science, History and Culture of Clouds” by Gavin Pretoria-Pinney as the primary course material and all students are encouraged to acquire a copy (Amazon, $11.17-$15.49).

PowerPoint material and anecdotes will enhance the educational experience. Available weather apps will be discussed, focusing on those which have been found to be most useful to PPYC sailors and why. However, such apps are simply one data point. The course focus is that a well-prepared sailor also interprets the data that is available real time and without electronics; the weather they are in at the moment. Strategies for coping with changing weather conditions and anecdotal experiences will be shared. This class will enable the student to better appreciate the weather, and therefore sailing.
