Introduction to Coastal Navigation

This course covers reading a chart, aids to navigation, tides and currents, determining one's position, plotting a course, planning a course to steer, and basic piloting.

The 2019 class will meet from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. for the five Thursday evenings in August at the Hamilton Creek Marina building.  In addition to classroom time, homework could require an additional two to three hours per week.

There is a $50 fee for the course payable to PPYC.  Provided for you in this fee is the training chart; the course book, Coastal Navigation (U.S. Sailing Assoc.); and a copy of the 2019 edition of the Eldridge Tide and Pilot Book.

You will need to purchase a basic set of plotting tools including a parallel ruler, plotter, and dividers. West Marine has a package for about $50 (West Marine) or search for the Weems & Plath Basic Navigation Set from your favorite retailer. Though not required for the course, you may also want to get a “hand held compass” (either puck-type or pistol grip) for future navigation.

Due to space requirements, registration is limited to twelve persons.  Registration is only through the instructor and payment is required with registration.  Contact the instructor, Kenny Cooper, by e-mailing or by phone/text at 615-330-0844 for further information, registration, and payment.  Registration deadline is July 15th.
